Power and Control in Seasons of Ambiguity by Ed Zeiders

Be careful to note that whenever there is a vacuum there will invariably be a rush to grab power and control. It is subtle or overt, but it can be recognized in the manipulation of others. I have experienced it and it’s ugly… God forgive me when I have caused it.

In families, communities, schools, universities, congregation, governments, and agencies at every level, the evidence abounds. Transitions are difficulty enough for many of us, but watching the power grab take place, and usually with any real consciousness of those who are the victims, is a tragic thing with lasting implications.

When we are a party to victimizing others, then confession is in order. Think about it for a moment and ponder how our decision-making, behavior, and relationships might well be the source of someone’s joy or another’s pain. When moments of prayer and reflection happen for me, it is not long until some painful thing will come to my consciousness, and the story replays in my soul until some liberating love, mercy or resolve takes place. Both of these things are real for me… such is the work of the Spirit of God who brings to our awareness the unspeakable riches of healing love coupled with the courageous and required steps toward newness of life.

When people believe they have seized the high ground the operative word is “seized.” I must be careful to pursue the sacred not for glory or vanity, but for humility where true love lives and reigns forever… such a quest is not possible alone.

—Just thinking.

FOR REFLECTION:

Think about it for a moment and ponder how our decision-making, behavior, and relationships might well be the source of someone’s joy or another’s pain.

Ask God to bring to mind times when your decision-making or behavior impacted another. If the impact was positive, rejoice with God over the mercy, and grace supplied; if negative seek God’s forgiveness and guidance as you seek to forgive and find healing.
