Call for Response to Racial Injustice

June 25, 2020

In these last few weeks I have been reading resources to challenge and inform myself as relates to Racism and White Privilege, resources like Freedom’s Pen, by Wendy Lawton; The Words of Martin Luther Kind, Jr., selected by Coretta Scott King; Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension of American Racism, by James W. Loewen; and How to be Antiracist, by Ibram X. Kendi. I’ve not finished all of them yet, but with just these few resources, I have learned so much, been reminded of so much, and been challenged to continue to move toward a deeper connection with ALL of God’s people.
Choosing to dismantle racism in our lives takes work! It’s not something that happens just because we decide we want it to happen. After we make that decision, we then have to put feet to our decision. We must choose to learn what we don’t know or understand, we must choose to place ourselves in places of discomfort and dis-ease, we must choose to act differently, speak differently, to examine ourselves. To that end, one of our Center Board members, Laura Baber shared something with me that I share with you in hopes that you, too, might find it helpful. I’m better at following processes and having a “path” to follow and this resource has helped me as I’ve attempted to examine my own motivations more closely in terms of becoming antiracist.  I hope you, too, might find the following chart to be both challenging and helpful as you seek to be transformed.
